Hello families of rising 6th graders! My name is Janae Rittenhouse, the Director of Counseling Services at DHMS, and I am so excited to welcome you to DHMS! You will officially be 6th graders in just a few days! During your middle school years, Erin Pennington will be your school counselor. She will be the counselor for the 6th grade class next year and follow you through 7th and 8th grade as your grade level counselor.
As summer approaches, we are beginning to think about and plan for our rising 6th grade class. We are very excited for you to join us in the fall! We understand that this involves a transition to middle school and that some of our rising 6th graders will approach this transition with some trepidation. We hope that the kids will enjoy middle school, but it is a new building with new teachers and new students. To help our students begin the adjustment to middle school, a school counselor will be giving transition tours this summer. They will show students around our wonderful building, discuss the schedule, and talk a little about what it is like to be a middle school student.
The transition tours will be on July 28 and 29 and August 10 and 11. The time slots will be at 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 p.m. Sign up here.
We scheduled the tours later in the day so that families could attend after a typical workday. There will be fifteen slots in each tour. If you feel that your child would benefit from having a friend on the same tour, you are welcome to coordinate with other parents. I would ask that you limit the coordination to one or two friends, however. Part of the middle school experience is to meet new people and develop new friendships.
Please note that our bilingual counselor, Mr. Ronald Valdez, will be available: on July 28 at 7 p.m. and August 10 at 2 p.m.
