At Dorothy Hamm Middle School, we strive to promote the advancement of high academic standards, college and career readiness, and clear expectations for student success. We work to ensure educational opportunities for our students and families and promote shared accountability for all stakeholders by providing professional learning focused on equity, diversity, and inclusion. We support social-emotional learning and cultivate self-advocacy skills for students.

Dr. Maurice Thornton is a Native Washingtonian who earned his Doctorate in Clinical Mental Health with a Specialization in Sport and Performance Psychology from University of Western States. Dr. Thornton comes to APS with over 12 years of experience in education with a commitment to creating a safe, empathetic and culturally inclusive environment where clients feel heard and empowered Dr. Thornton believes in employing a strengths-based approach and works collaboratively with parents, students, staff and the larger community to foster growth with all stakeholders to decrease inequity for our marginalized students. Outside of education, Dr. Thornton enjoys nature, yoga, dancing and karaoke, which contributes to his overall well-being. Dr. Thornton is excited to join the APS community and looks forward to being a positive influence in the school and community.
