Thank you to our students and PTSA for the wonderful mugs, messages, and treats for Valentine’s Day.  We sure felt the love when we found those treats in our mailboxes! My #PhoenixStrong bracelet is a permanent addition to my wrist!

I appreciate the Superintendent’s Return to School messaging that came out this week. It is very exciting to anticipate a first step in returning to some sort of normalcy. In the end of February DHMS staff will share more details about the return to school process for students.  Know that we are very aware that two-thirds of our students will be virtual on any day of the week, and one-third of our students will continue fully virtual.  Teachers must continue to design learning experiences that are authentic and engaging for students in both the virtual model and the hybrid model.  Please be patient with us as we learn yet another new skill.  Stay tuned for more details.

On December 7th parents were given another opportunity to select their student’s learning pathway for the 2020-21 school year.  After gathering and reviewing the selections that were made, DHMS and APS staff members analyzed the facilities, transportation, and staffing needs to plan for compliance with the CDC guidelines and implement mitigation strategies for everyone’s safety.

As a result, we are not accepting changes to students’ learning pathways, except a move to fully virtual, to ensure that safety guidelines for classroom capacity and social distancing requirements are met.  If there are any changes to the CDC guidelines that allow us the opportunity to honor pathway change requests, we will notify parents at that time.

We appreciate your understanding of our limitations and restrictions in order to ensure everyone’s safety during this challenging and unprecedented time.

Here are two important events this coming week:

• PTSA Meeting:  On Tuesday at 6:30 PM, join the PTSA Zoom Meeting to learn a little bit about Math Pathways in Arlington Public Schools. Shannan Ellis, Stephanie Nichols, from the APS Math Department, and our very own Courtney Arifin, the DHMS Math Coach, will be available to discuss Math Pathways in APS.
• Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Dorothy Hamm Academic Course Information Night: We invite you to join DHMS staff to discuss middle school course selections for next year. Bring your student “with” you!  This virtual event will be recorded and posted on the DHMS website if you cannot attend.
  • When:  Thursday, February 18, 2021 from 6:30-7:30 pm
  • How:  join the session via Microsoft Teams using the appropriate grade level link (sent via email)

Next week:  Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences – February 25 (PM) and February 26 (AM)Please expect a reach out via email or phone from your Phoenix Student’s TA Teacher to schedule a 20-minute conference for either the afternoon of February 25 or the morning of February 26.  The purpose of this conference is to continue to build the school/family connection; provide the student with an opportunity to talk about how things are going; and answer any questions that families might have.

Camera Policy – Update from APS:  The school district has received consistent feedback from teachers, parents, advisory committees, and participants in the Distance Learning focus groups and Task Force, indicating that when students consistently have their cameras turned off, it is very difficult:

• to gauge their real-time engagement in lessons
• to determine if students are experiencing social-emotional distress
• for staff to build meaningful relationships with students

As a result, the expectations for APS students are changing:

• we encourage them to have their cameras on during synchronous instruction
• we expect them to have them on while interacting with peers in breakout rooms, and during office hours/meetings with teachers

Students who do not immediately turn on their cameras will not be penalized nor will they be pressured to turn on their camera. The concerns about equity and family privacy remains. DHMS staff will teach students to blur their backgrounds using the IPad and encourage students to turn on their cameras with school-wide messages from administration and regular announcements.  Please ask your youngster to turn on their camera during synchronous time, while in breakout rooms, and when meeting with a teacher.

History Bee – Calling all historians! Do you like competitions? Would you like the chance to compete at the regional or even national level? Then listen up because this event is for you. Mark your calendar for… THIS Thursday, February 18 at 3:00 pm. for the qualifying round of the 2021 International Academic Competition’s History Bee. For this event, you will join a Microsoft Teams call with your camera on and answer a series of questions. Students who do well will advance to the Regional Finals and possibly even the National Finals. Check your Social Studies teacher’s Canvas page for a Microsoft Teams Link for the History Bee competition. Don’t miss this annual opportunity to show off your history knowledge.

12 de febrero de 2021Gracias a nuestros estudiantes y PTSA por las bonitas tazas, mensajes y obsequios por el Día de San Valentín. ¡Claro que sentimos su cariño cuando encontramos esas golosinas en nuestros buzones de correo! ¡Mi pulsera #PhoenixStrong no me la saco en ningún momento!Agradezco el mensaje de regreso a la escuela del Superintendente que salió esta semana. Es muy emocionante anticipar un primer paso para regresar a algún tipo de normalidad. A fines de febrero, el personal de DHMS compartirá más detalles sobre el proceso de regreso a la escuela para los estudiantes. Sepa que somos muy conscientes de que dos tercios de nuestros estudiantes serán virtuales en cualquier día de la semana, y un tercio de nuestros estudiantes continuarán siendo completamente virtuales. El propósito de esta conferencia es continuar haciendo más fuerte la conexión entre la escuela/familia; brindarle al estudiante la oportunidad de hablar sobre cómo van las cosas; y responder cualquier pregunta que las familias puedan tener.La Política de cámaras – Actualización de APS: El distrito escolar ha recibido comentarios constantes de maestros, padres, comités asesores y participantes en los grupos encargados directamente del aprendizaje a distancia y el Grupo de trabajo, que indica que cuando los estudiantes apagan constantemente sus cámaras, es muy difícil:• medir su participación en las lecciones en tiempo real• determinar si los estudiantes están experimentando angustia socioemocional• que el personal establezca relaciones significativas con los estudiantesComo resultado, las expectativas para los estudiantes de APS están cambiando:• Les animamos a que tengan sus cámaras encendidas durante la instrucción sincrónica.• Esperamos que las usen mientras interactúan con sus compañeros en las salas de reuniones y durante horario de oficina/reuniones con profesores.Los estudiantes que no pongan sus cámaras inmediatamente no serán penalizados ni serán presionados para que enciendan su cámara.
