Phoenix Flyer #20

February 19, 2021

Good afternoon, DHMS Families! I hope your kiddos enjoyed the unexpected snow day, yesterday.  I wish we had really gotten snow, rather than the ice pellets that fell from the sky!  Hopefully, though, spring is right around the corner. A short(er) Phoenix Flyer this week – with mostly announcements and things to be aware of:

Course Information Sessions – were postponed until Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:30.  The links have been shared via DHMS SchoolTalk message.  We will resend on Monday.  These links will also be posted in your student’s Grade Level Counselor Canvas Page if you want to access from their device.

Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences – are scheduled for Thursday, February 25th (after school) and Friday, February 26th (morning).  Your student’s TA teacher will reach out via email or phone to schedule.  Please call the main office next week if you haven’t been able to schedule with your TA teacher.

Broadcast News Team – Our Rock Star Broadcast Team has been spotlighting local Black History in each February broadcast; they have interviewed Black Arlingtonians about their experiences growing up in Arlington and, in some cases, heard what it was like to be part of the integration of our very own building.  Please check out our webpage to watch these amazing interviews – and stay tuned to hear from more honored citizens.

Returning to School in Person – The DHMS staff is excited about welcoming smaller groups of students back into our building.  Sixth grade students signed up for hybrid will return the week of March 9; Seventh and eighth grade students signed up for hybrid will return the week of March 16.  Mondays will still be asynchronous (with shorter assignments and office hours for students). If your student’s last name begins with A through K, they will be in the building on Tuesdays and Wednesdays; if your student’s last name begins with a letter between L and Z, they will be coming on Thursday and Fridays.

As a reminder:

  • Asynchronous – students complete independent work on their own time schedule
  • Synchronous – students report to their regularly scheduled classes on MS Teams or in person

To check your student’s Instructional Delivery Model and Days Assignment in ParentVue:

  • When you log into ParentVue on either a computer or phone, click on the “Student Info” tab.
  • On a computer, about half-way down the screen is the section called “Instructional Delivery Method for SY20-21.” This will tell you if your student is hybrid or virtual. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen, there is a section called “In-Person Return Information” and that gives you which days of the week your student is coming to school.
  • On a phone/tablet, after clicking on the “Student Info” tab, at the bottom of the page, you must click “Additional Information” to see which model (hybrid/virtual) and which days of the week your student is reporting.

It is possible that the synchronous and asynchronous parts of different classes may shift slightly, especially as we support students in moving (socially distanced) around our very large building.  We will keep you posted on this.

In preparation for return, APS is prepping a daily health screening email or text that parents will use to verify the good health of each child before they come into any school building.  More info about this will be coming, but please verify that your email address and mobile number (for text messages) are updated in Synergy to receive this information.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the main office for more information about how to update your contact information. Please join the DHMS PTSA Town Hall on March 2.  During this presentation, we will share as many details as we can about what the return in person looks like, how to prepare your youngster to return in person, and how instruction may change.

Best,
Ellen

Atentamente,
Ellen
