Good afternoon Dorothy Hamm Students and Families,

This last Phoenix Flyer comes to you with such mixed feelings. Of course, I am delighted that summer is upon us, and I’m so proud of the work our students have done this year.  But I’m sad to say goodbye to so many wonderful students and you, their families, who have been so supportive of teachers and school staff at DHMS this year. The promotion ceremony yesterday was just lovely. Congratulations and Kudos to the DHMS Broadcast Team, one last time, for a thoughtful, personal, and professional-grade virtual ceremony. The student performances, speeches, interviews were fantastic, and we were delighted to see over 160 people join us for the livestream event!  Over two hundred students walked along the driveway to pick up their certificates of promotion, take pictures with their teachers, and accept the wonderful gifts that the PTSA put together.  If you missed the promotion ceremony, please check it out on the DHMS website. Thanks to our Eighth Grade Promotion Committee for your wonderful support.

The summertime is a great chance to get prepped for next year:

  • If your Phoenix student is an athlete, please get their physical in the next few months– students must have a physical on file to try out.  The required physical form is on the DHMS Website!  Remember, our Fall Sports are Soccer, Tennis and Ultimate Frisbee!
  • The DHMS Basic School Supply list will be on the DHMS Website by July 1!  Stay tuned!
  • Please continue to make sure our Phoenix students READ, READ, READ!  There are two bookshelves outside of Door 1 that you are welcome to Read and Return.  As well, Arlington County Public Library is sponsoring another Summer Reading Program, including a Summer Reading Challenge. This is a great activity for families to participate.  Most importantly, though, just read.

Check out the DHMS Webpage regularly for summer updates and interesting things going on.  We can’t wait to see students back in our building, at normal capacity! Finally – a huge shout-out to our first PTSA Executive Board – some of whom are moving on to high school.  This team has been supportive, flexible, energetic, and passionate about helping our middle school students adjust to all of the changes they have experienced in the last two years.  Thank you so much:
Holly Tennent Billy

Thank you all so much for two wonderful, chaotic, exciting, and challenging years. You are the best. See you in the neighborhood!
