I am so glad to be teaching at Dorothy Hamm! I grew up in Arlington and attended Ashlawn, Swanson, and Washington-Liberty. I attended the University of Virginia, where I earned a BA in American Studies and a Masters of Teaching in Secondary Social Studies. After, I worked as an intern at the Smithsonian National American History Museum and then taught awesome students at W-L for eight years. My partner and I have a baby girl born in late 2022. When I'm not hanging out with her, I enjoy baking, reading, hiking, basketball and tennis, doing arts and crafts, solving all kinds of puzzles, and learning about history and the magical animal kingdom!

I teach 6th grade Social Studies and have taught in Arlington Public Schools for many years. In fact, I'm a longtime resident of Arlington myself. I and my two adult children all attended Arlington Public Schools. A fun fact is that my mother was the librarian at Stratford Junior High School, the campus which is now Dorothy Hamm. I have a B.A. from Virginia Tech and a M.Ed. from George Mason University. Prior to teaching, I worked at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City as an immigration consultant for a legalization program for migrant farmworkers. I also worked on two federal commissions on immigration reform. Prior to teaching at DHMS, I was a middle school teacher at Jefferson Middle School and an elementary Spanish teacher at Jamestown and McKinley Elementary Schools.

I was born and raised in Arlington and attended Drew, Gunston, and W-L. I then majored in American Studies and Studio Art at UVA, where I also got my Master of Teaching in Secondary Social Studies Education. I actually wrote my undergraduate thesis on narratives of local history in Arlington County from the post WWII era to the present! I taught Civics and Economics for two years in Alexandria before returning to APS. Outside of teaching I love to paint, draw, and sew.

Madison Loszynski

Mrs. Loszynski is excited to be back for another great year at Dorothy Hamm Middle School! She earned her Bachelor of Education from The Pennsylvania State University (WE ARE!) as well as a minor in Special Education. She also earned her Master of Education from George Mason University with a focus in curriculum and instruction. Mrs. Loszynski loves working with her students to develop important skills, look at the past and present from various perspectives, and express how important each of us are in making a difference in our community and world. Mrs. Loszynski was so lucky to get to marry her best friend last year and in her free time, she enjoys going on adventures with her husband and black lab, Roxy, completing DIY projects, spending time with family and friends, and singing. Follow along with Mrs. Loszynski and her students on X @mrsloszynski and Instagram @learningwithloszynski to keep up with the latest info!

I grew up in Arlington and I'm a proud graduate of Yorktown High School and the University of Mary Washington. This is my first year at DHMS but my 17th year teaching middle school social studies for APS. When I am not teaching, I spend all my free time driving around Arlington as a swim mom, lacrosse mom, and field hockey mom.

I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, but have called Arlington home for more than 25 years. I live here with my husband, our two adult sons and our dog, Cady. (She is named for Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Acadia National Park in Maine, our family's favorite place!) Being near water always makes me happy. So does reading and being with friends and family. My passion for teaching, government, politics and history began when I was in the 8th grade and realized that even though I could not yet vote, I still had a voice. I became a teacher so I could help others learn how to speak up in their own communities. After teaching at Gunston and Williamsburg, I am excited to be here at DHMS.

I grew up in New Jersey and am the oldest of four. I went to Bucknell University in PA and George Washington University in Washington, DC. I am married and live in Arlington. My three children are all over the place this year. Will – just graduated from American University in DC, with an International Relations and Russian degree, Abby – Junior at Christopher Newport University near Virginia Beach, and Jonah – Senior student and baseball player at the Highland School in Warrenton. In my free time, I like to read, walk, and hang out with my family. This will be my 29th year in public education!

I have been in Arlington for the past twenty years, but spent the first few decades going from elementary school, through high school, college, and graduate school at Penn State. I am so excited to start my second year here at DHMS teaching World Geography. It's very fitting as I find the ability to travel the world to be one of the greatest gifts I have. That, and my two children, a fifth and eleventh grader here in Arlington.
