Important Update: New VHSL Physical Form and Rule Changes
The VHSL has released an updated version of the physical packet for the upcoming school year. This new version includes significant changes to both the form itself and the state’s regulations regarding physical examinations.
Student-athletes are still required to undergo a physical examination and submit proof of medical clearance from a licensed medical provider (MD, DO, CNP, or PA). However, the form used for this clearance has been updated—please refer to the new packet provided.
A major change from the state level is that physicals are now valid for 14 months from the date of examination. As a result, the VHSL has eliminated the previous validity window of May 1 – June 30 of the following year. Under this new rule, athletes must submit a new physical every 14 months to remain eligible.
Please note: This rolling expiration could cause eligibility issues if not closely monitored—for example, a physical done on July 28, 2025, would expire on September 28, 2026, making a student ineligible to compete on September 29, 2026, if a new form hasn’t been submitted.
For the 2024–2025 school year, physicals completed using the old form will still expire on June 30, 2025. Starting July 1, 2025, only the new forms will be accepted, and all physicals will be valid for 14 months from the exam date. We kindly ask for your cooperation and patience as we adjust to these changes. Please work closely with your healthcare providers to ensure the correct forms are completed and submitted. To avoid disruptions during your child’s sports season, we strongly recommend submitting updated physicals well before the 14-month expiration.
